Nestled in the western United States, Black Rock City hosts Burning Man, a week-long, large-scale desert event that revolves around "community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance."
This annual gathering, held in northwestern Nevada's Black Rock Desert since 1991, transforms the barren landscape about 100 miles north-northeast of Reno into a temporary city. The event reaches its pinnacle on the penultimate night with the symbolic burning of a colossal wooden effigy known as the Man, embodying the spirit of this ephemeral and vibrant community. According to Burning Man co-founder Larry Harvey in 2004, the community is guided by ten stated principles: radical inclusion, gifting, decommodification, radical self-reliance, radical self-expression, communal effort, civic responsibility, leaving no trace, participation, and immediacy.
